Getting started

📝

What started as a personal idea quiclkly turned into a collaboration of four people, and in less than 4 weeks, we wrapped it up!

I was involved in the entire design process: from ideation and research to wireframing, visual design and prototyping.

Our objective was to create an online space where book lovers anywhere could come together, discover & access new books, and interact with one other over their shared passion for reading.

How it all came together

As someone surrounded by book lovers, I've come to understand how much means to them when they get the chance to meet, interact, and discover new books.

I've seen the sense of community and connection that naturally grows from their conversation, and how it brought them even closer.

During one of my random outing, I met Sarah, an avid reader of over eight years. Her face lit up as she shared her journey so far. For her, books had always been a steady source of comfort and inspiration.

But her frustration was finding her kinda books, and more than once, she has wished she had friends like her to share her experiences with.

When I asked what keeps her going on despite her all that, she simply said Escape!

Just like Sarah, they are millions of avid readers globally.

In the US alone, around 74% of adults reads at least one book a year, with nearly half reading 4-5 books or more annually, reflecting a strong reading culture (according to Pew Research Center).

While the survey highlights the levels of readership, it also reveals that readers often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of available titles and seek a more personalized recommendations.

Many respondents also expresses their desire to connect with other individuals who share similar interests.

May be it's just a Sarah thing

🤔

After identifying the challenges, we decided to take a closer look at existing platforms to understand how they are apporoaching the problem. The goal is to observe what works and also explore opportunities for improvement.

So what are other platforms doing?

While these platforms addressed many needs of book lovers, there isn’t a single app that brings all these essential functions together in one cohesive experience.

We also saw an opportunity to improve in the existing system to give users a more deeper experience. For example:

  • The social features feel surface level. We want to enable users see what others are currently reading, readers of a particular book, and also join dedicated boolclubs.

  • Book management: Users will be able to catalog the books they have read, want to read, or are currently reading.

  • Book discovery: Users will be able to discover books through personal recommendations, shared excerpts from friends on timeline, or profile visits.

MOODBOARDING | STYLE GUIDE

To set the visual direction for Bookmark, we began creating a moodboard that captured the essence of community, discovery, and the joy of reading. We pulled references from book cafés, cozy libraries, and modern social platforms to strike a balance between warmth and functionality.

We explored tones that felt approachable and lively. Clean typography and legible typefaces that could support long-form reading but still feel fresh in a digital context. Imagery and iconography were inspired social and group interaction.

SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS (Facebook, IG, TikTok)

Many readers currently turn to social media pages and communities that are dedicated to book lovers. These spaces allow users to:

  • Follow book influencers for recommendations.

  • Participate in group discussions.

  • Share reviews, quotes, and reading lists with like-minded audiences.

EXHIBIT A:

DEDICATED APPS

Apps like Goodreads, TheStoryGreap, Listy are designed specifically for book discovery, recommendation, and tracking. They provide features such as

  • Cataloging personal libraries and completed reads.

  • Community reviews and ratings.

  • Reading goal setting.

  • Personalized suggestions based on genre or past reads.

EXHIBIT B:

WIREFRAMING

The goal here was to focus on structure and flow, ensuring that the user journey felt intuitive before diving into visual design. I sketched out low-fidelity wireframes that mapped core experiences:

  • Discovery: how users find new books and recommendations.

  • Community: how book clubs and discussions are presented in an engaging way.

  • Tracking: how readers catalog books they’ve read, are currently reading, or want to explore.

HIGH FIDELITY VISUALS

CONNECT WITH FAVOURITE AUTHORS

In this feature, users are able to follow their favorite authors and keep up with their latest works, events, and updates.

It creates a sense of closeness between readers and writers, turning books from just stories on a page into an ongoing conversation.

SHARE EXCERPTS ON YOUR TIMELINE

In this feature, users can highlight and share memorable excerpts from books directly on their timeline.

It allows readers to express what resonates with them, spark conversations, and inspire others in the community through the words that moved them most.

PLATFORM RECOMMEDATION

In this feature, users receive curated recommendations from the platform, such as Book of the Week or Most Read.

This not only helps readers discover trending titles but also creates a shared sense of what the community is engaging with, making book discovery more dynamic and exciting.

BOOK TRACKING

This feature helps users organize and stay on top of their reading journey. Books are neatly categorized into Marked (saved for later), Reading (currently exploring), and Completed (finished titles).

This structure makes it easy for readers to manage their progress, revisit past favorites, and keep their “to-read” list in check.

BOOK ACCESS AND MANAGEMENT

This feature is split into two parts: Bookstore and Bookshelf. The Bookstore is where users can browse, discover, and purchase new titles.

Once a book is bought, it automatically moves into the Bookshelf, a personal library where readers can easily access, organize, and manage all their owned books.

Parallex Bank - Connecting Students Needs with Banking Solution

Fintech, Cooperation

This project highlights how important it is to ground design decisions in both qualitative stories and quantitative evidence. Talking to book lovers like Sarah revealed emotional motivations. But, while anecdotal insights were good, I recognized the need for broader research to validate assumptions and ensure the solution scales beyond individual stories.

Another discovery was that reading, though often seen as a solitary activity, is deeply social at its core. Our book journeys are shaped not only by personal taste but by the influence of others; As René Girard's theory of mimetic desire suggests, "as humans, we don’t generate desires in isolation — we borrow them from others.

Working within four weeks showed me the importance of prioritization. Not every idea can fit into a first release, and focusing on the features most tied to community and discovery sharpened my ability to make intentional trade-offs under constraints.
